Photography Hudson Valley

Well it’s been a while hasn’t it.  It seems like I haven’t posted anything in forever.  I really just haven’t been in the mood to do any writing lately.  Nothing I really wanted to write about.  I’m still kicking booty on my engagement shoots, and have a few random gigs coming up here and there.  Honestly though I just love taking pictures of people.  After working on this last Engagement session I realized how much I really love taking pictures of people.  It just makes me smile.

So I got a new lens.  I promised myself that next time the 24-70 came up for sale on BH’s website that I would grab one.  And I finally pulled the trigger this week.  I so often shoot with portrait length lenses that it’s weird for me to work at the 24mm range.  It sure does take some getting used

to.  There are a ton of shots that I’ve had in my head, but I haven’t done because I don’t have a lens that’s at that focal length.  This is one of those shots.  I wanted to get this more backlit and more of a silhouette, but after I saw this I decided that I liked it better with color, and exposed for the street and the buildings.  I’ve really been digging on trying to get out and do more street photography.  It’s always been a passion of mine, but I’m trying to push myself more and more.  Get closer, get a reaction, Find interesting people,  put those interesting people in interesting settings.

My biggest challenge is finding a spot that if you put a person in X place in the shot it would make a really great shot.  I need to be a better location scout for that kind of stuff.  I’m a great location scout for portraits and stuff, but finding areas where someone could walk into the frame and make the shot is a challenge for me.  So I’ve been trying to work on that.  This shot is a testament to that fact.

I knew in my head the shot I wanted to get so I sat across the street and waited for the best shot.  I had a few single people walk into the frame but I missed them when they were at the apex of the alleyway.  I changed my camera to continuous high and started taking burst shots when they got to about the right place.  That was the key to this shot was not trying to click right at the right time, but clicking a little before and a little after and picking the best shot.  This is where a camera with high frame rate really comes in handy.  Think about that the next time you look into getting a camera.  Because I know everyone always advertises the frame rate when it ties to sports or “action” shots, but really it applies to a lot of things.  For instance me, I’m not a sports shooter.  But it was crucial for this shot.

stats: 1/1600th f/3.2 ISO 640 24mm

I have to say I’m already impressed with this lens, and I can’t wait to see where it takes my photography.

Well I’m off to a shoot hope you like it.
